Coffee

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I got into coffee a little bit. I’m not “a weird coffee guy”, but I like good coffee. For the record, Nespresso is not good coffee. Starbucks is also not good coffee. I have a Fellow Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 which I love. It grinds very nicely, doesn’t suffer from the static issues that plague many grinders and it looks lovely on our counter. I also have a Fellow Stagg EKG Kettle which I also love. It makes cold water into hot water quite efficiently and also looks nice on our counter. I mostly get my coffee from Bean Around the World (BATW) which is a North Vancouver-based coffee roaster. My favourite coffee from BATW is Guatamala Santa Clara which is a single origin, medium roast arabica coffee. Flavour notes are “chocolate”, “caramel” and “sweet” which is accurate. To brew, I usually grind ~13.7 grams of coffee at about 4.1 on the Ode grinder. I use an AeroPress with the Flow Control Filter Cap. I use ~250 grams of 100ºC water. I steep for about 2 minutes with a gentle stir around a minute into the brew. The aforementioned “weird coffee guy” is where that recipe mostly came from. For me, that yields a perfect cup of coffee. I have an Ember mug which is both ridiculous, and also one of my favourite things in the whole world. It is an overpriced, Bluetooth-enabled coffee mug and I love the stupid thing. It brings me joy. It’s set to hold the temperature at 54.5ºC and it keeps the coffee perfectly drinkable from the first to the last sip.
